The principle objective of this biocontainment facility is to allow researchers to study disease agents infectious to humans. This important work must be done while protecting research, animal care and maintenance personnel working in the facility and protecting the environment outside the facility.
The project involved 5,000 square feet of renovations to animal research laboratories and an ABSL-3ag Tb isolation suite. It included a sophisticated HVAC system with welded stainless ductwork and filtration systems, HEPA filters, controls based on pressure of isolation rooms, and vermen-proof colony rooms finished with epoxy flooring and seal tight fixtures. A critical project issue was coordinating all construction with the laboratory users to maintain an active working environment and to avoid disruption to ongoing experiments.
