The Most Stylish Wine Store
in New York City

Zagat 1999/2000 Su
rvey Guide to NYC’s top food and entertaining sources describes Grande Harvest Wines as perhaps the most stylish wine store in New York City.

When the fit-out started, no one anticipated the challenges we would encounter, nor the architectural relics we would find. The owner, Bruce Nevins of Hay Day Wine Shop, could see the potential in the planning of this exclusive and upscale retail destination, part of the revitalization and renaissance of the terminal. He had the vision for Grande Harvest Wines, a shop to showcase an exceptional selection of wines representing the best vintage years and vineyards. To move the project forward, there was a tight schedule to be met and he was concerned with finding a contractor with experience working in NYC, could navigate the stringent regulations of the terminal, and had a track record of avoiding delays and disputes. He was referred to Caldwell & Walsh.

Focusing on the historic integrity of the space, we were very sensitive to how the owner wanted the store to look. Demolition began on a fast-track schedule and upon opening an existing ceiling we discovered the arched ceiling above. Rather than removing it, we stopped demolition and suggested to the design team that it be restored. Soon, a mural with a planetarium-like theme was revealed beneath grime and soot that we also brought immediately to their attention. The mural has become the crowning glory of the restored rotunda dome, meticulously restored by skilled artisans. Other historical items discovered were hidden stairways, catwalks, and crawl spaces.
