Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities

New York University College of Dentistry is the third oldest and largest dental school in the United States. They recently opened their Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities to provide much-needed care for individuals whose disabilities preclude them from receiving treatment in a conventional dental setting.

This project provides improved access to state-of-the-art facilities and experienced care providers. The entire facility was constructed while being mindful of design considerations for corridor widths, doors and hardware, ramp slopes, sinks and vanities as well as counter clearances. ADA accommodations, including wheelchair lifts and ramps, can be found throughout the 9 patient operatory rooms, 2 sedation suites, 2 medical procedure rooms, reception area, and restrooms. A multisensory room adjacent to the waiting area offers a relaxing and engaging environment to help patients relieve stress and anxiety.

This project was completed just 21 weeks from permit issuance. It’s gratifying to know this project not only helps people who have faced barriers accessing dental care, but provides the next generation of dentists a well-appointed training facility to treat patients with special needs.
